As we become increasingly involved in the pursuit of green, renewable energy sources, it’s important to understand what types of research are being done to make sure we’re well on our way to creating a greener world. That’s why the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) was established in 1974. In order to help people broaden their horizons about renewable energy, information was recently made public about NREL and the research that goes on there.

The first thing we must understand about NREL is that it is government owned and operated, annually funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This means that it has the full support of the government as a place where renewable energy methods are developed and tested for commercial (and eventually private) use.

Located in Golden, CO, the facility is equipped to research and test just about any type of energy prospect, including hydro, solar, wind and geothermal. Quite recently, the facility has also been experimenting openly with biofuels and other sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels.
