An awning is a covering attached to the exterior wall of a building. It can be made of canvas, acrylic, or a polyester material covered in vinyl laminates that has been stretched over a frame. Most frequently they are placed over a window or door, but they can also be used to provide a sun and weather-shaded area for sitting or entertaining outdoors.
While adding awnings to your home can make it more attractive, and even add value, their best attribute would be function. By deflecting the suns rays away from your windows, you reduce the need for air conditioning. This lowers your monthly bills and also helps to cut down energy waste.
There are both manual and retractable awnings. The latter works with the touch of a button, and often includes safety devices to protect them from high winds, but they are substantially more expensive to purchase.
Using awnings to shade your deck or patio, gives you the ability to use and enjoy this outdoor room with much greater comfort. You can now barbecue when it is raining, and sit outside without a hot sun beating down on you. It is almost as though you added another room on to your home…without the huge costs.
